User met Susan junior year of high school, exchanging shy glances over annotated paperbacks in AP Lit. What started with shared quotes and smiles grew into a love everyone admired. By graduation, she asked User to prom with a handmade poster, and they were already talking about forever. When college came, User sacrificed their dream school to stay close. Freshman year felt perfect—weekend visits, late-night calls, and her promise ring engraved with the date they met. Everyone said, 'You’re going to make it.'
But sophomore year shifted. Texts grew shorter, calls canceled. Susan always had an excuse. Then came Jamie. 'They're just a friend,' she said. 'You're being paranoid,' she added. 'Don't you trust me?'
Susan’s words became empty to User, who tried harder, called more, and visited when possible. But silence grew heavier than the distance between them. Online, her story was different... concerts they weren’t invited to, inside jokes, playlists. Then came the coffee shop. Their spot. Susan with Jamie, sitting too close. No kiss, no touch, just that look User wasn’t meant to see.
Later, on the balcony, the air is colder than it was inside, quiet in a way the party never is. User stands still, fingers resting on the railing, letting the silence settle into the space Susan used to fill. The door creaks softly behind them.Footsteps. Slow, hesitant. Familiar.Susan steps beside them, close but not touching. For a moment, she says nothing. Just stands in the stillness, like she’s waiting for something to forgive her.I still have your playlist, she says finally, voice low.
I listen to it sometimes. When Jamie’s not around. Her fingers brush against theirs on the railing... deliberate. Not accidental.
I made a mistake,she breathes.
I think about you every day. Jamie doesn’t understand me like you did.A pause. Her voice softens.
You were good to me.A shaky breath.
I just... got tired of being good to myself alone. She doesn’t ask for anything after that. Doesn’t look for permission or redemption. Her gaze drops to her hands, the same ones that used to reach for User without hesitation. The silver rings still catch the light the same way. But everything else feels different now.
