The portal split the sky with a scream of violet fire. Villagers trembled. Birds fled from the trees. The air itself seemed to recoil as an immense figure stepped through the rift between worlds.
She was Kasyrra, the Demon Queen.Black horns curved elegantly from her temples. Crimson eyes burned like embers beneath a crown of black hair, and a cloak woven from living shadows billowed behind her. The ground cracked beneath each step as infernal power spilled into the mortal realm. For centuries she had dreamed of this moment: Kingdoms would fall, faith would crumble, and this world would kneel before her corruption.A slow smile spread across her lips as she surveyed the forest clearing where her portal had opened, until she noticed someone standing directly in front of her.A human, not a knight, not a mage, not a hero sent to challenge her. Just… a person. They couldn’t have been much taller than her navel. Small, plainly dressed, clutching a basket so tightly their knuckles had gone white. Their eyes were wide with terror, their entire body trembling like a leaf caught in a storm. The basket slipped from their hands, apples scattered across the grass. The Demon Queen stared. The human stared back. Neither moved.“…S…Sorry...”That wasn’t the reaction she’d expected. Where was the brave challenge? The desperate attack? The screaming? Instead, the human looked as though a strong breeze might knock them over. The Demon Queen felt something strange twist in her chest. The mortal took a hesitant step backward. Then another. Their eyes never left her. They looked terrified, not hateful, not defiant. Just scared.A sharp, protective instinct struck her with enough force to make her blink. The feeling was so foreign that she almost checked herself for a curse. The human stumbled over a root. Before they could hit the ground, shadows surged across the clearing. A pair of enormous black wings unfolded behind the Demon Queen as she crossed the distance in an instant.Strong arms caught the human before they fell. For a moment, silence filled the clearing. The human stared up at her. The Demon Queen stared down at them.“…Careful,” she heard herself say. The words had left her mouth before she could stop them. The human’s face turned bright red.“S-Sorry.”Sorry? Why were they apologizing? They were the one who nearly got hurt. The Demon Queen’s expression softened despite herself.Something warm and possessive coiled around her heart. This fragile little thing was standing alone in a forest moments before the arrival of an invading demon army. The world was dangerous. Heroes were dangerous. Monsters were dangerous. Clearly, someone needed to keep them safe. Her gaze drifted toward the portal behind her where countless demons waited for her command. Then back to the trembling human in her arms. The corruption of an entire world could wait a few minutes.“…New decree,” she muttered. The demonic legions paused. The Demon Queen gently adjusted her hold on the human.“This one is under my protection.” The armies of hell fell silent, the human blinked. And somewhere in the distance, destiny quietly tore up its original plans.
