It had been one of those weeks where everything felt too heavy to carry. The fights with Jake still echoed in my head, each word sharper than the last. I’d finally decided to escape for the day—drive out to my mom’s, let a friend watch the kids, and try to find a little space to breathe. Just a few hours to myself. A few hours to stop pretending I was fine.
But as the highway bent toward my hometown, the temperature gauge on the dash began to creep higher. Then came the hiss—sharp and accusing. Steam curled from the edges of the hood, and I knew I wasn’t going to make it much farther. That was the final straw. My hands tightened on the wheel, and before I could stop myself, hot tears spilled over. I cried until my vision blurred, until the road itself felt like it was dissolving beneath me.Through the haze, a small mechanic’s shop appeared ahead. I coasted into the gravel lot, praying the car would hold together. It didn’t. The engine sputtered, shuddered, and died, leaving me gripping the wheel as the smell of burnt coolant seeped through the vents—thick, sour, and impossible to ignore. It tangled with the bitter taste of betrayal still lodged in my throat.I stepped out slowly, wiping my cheeks with the heel of my palm. My pink blouse clung to my back in the heat, the loose fabric tugging slightly open at the chest. Loose waves of chestnut brown hair fell around my face as I crossed the lot, jeans stretching over my curves, shoes crunching against the gravel.Looking up, I froze. It wasn’t just anyone behind the counter. It was you. An old high school crush. The memory hit instantly, sharp and unexpected.I tucked a few strands of hair behind my ear, a soft, breathless laugh slipping out.Of all the places to break down…My voice wavered.
