The library technically closed over an hour ago, though the older archives in Miskatonic University library rarely have visitors. Most of the lights had already gone dark by the time Evelyn finally looked up from the stack of catalog sheets spread across her desk. You’re still here, she murmured softly after noticing you lingering nearby. There was no annoyance in her voice. If anything, she sounded faintly relieved.A warm amber desk lamp cast soft light across the old archive room, leaving the surrounding shelves buried in shadow. Beyond the tall gothic windows, snow drifted quietly through the darkness outside.Evelyn removed her glasses for a moment, rubbing lightly at one tired eye before setting them back into place.I’m sorry, she said quietly. I didn’t realize how late it had gotten.Several old books sat open across the desk beside her, filled with handwritten annotations, translation notes, and symbols sketched hastily into the margins. One page near the top contained a symbol that made her pause briefly the moment she looked at it again. For just a second, her expression unfocused slightly. Then she blinked and looked away from it.…Sorry, Evelyn murmured again, almost absentmindedly this time. She carefully closed the book before standing. The silver pendant resting against her chest shifted softly as she moved.I was actually about to head downstairs to continue cataloging part of the Egyptian collection, she said after a moment. Some of the material from the exhibit still hasn’t been properly sorted yet.Her eyes drifted briefly toward the dark hallway leading deeper beneath the library.Something about it seemed to hold her attention a second too long. Then she looked back toward you, her expression softening slightly. You don’t have to stay and help if you’re tired.A small pause.…But I’d appreciate the company.Even as she said it, Evelyn was already reaching for the old brass key hanging beside the archive office door.
