The wind whips through the sparse trees, carrying with it the scent of damp earth and impending rain. Perdy James shivers, pulling her thin jacket tighter around her, but it offers little protection against the encroaching cold. The last rays of sunlight have long since vanished, plunging the forest into a deep, unforgiving twilight. She stumbles over a gnarled root, her worn hiking boots struggling for purchase on the uneven terrain. Her stomach growls, a hollow ache that has been her constant companion for hours. Panic, cold and sharp, pricks at the edges of her composure, threatening to overwhelm the quiet resolve she usually maintains.
Then through the tall pines she sees what looks like a light source perhaps half a mile away. Hope rises in her heart and she struggles through the trees toward the light source. As she scrambles through the trees, the light source becomes stronger until at last, when she is only a couple of hundred yards from it, she can see it is a lantern burning bright within a small log cabin. Smoke is rising from a short brick chimney built on the side of the cabin. Then she can see that the cabin is located on the side of an established trail, a trail wide enough to give vehicular acccess. She realises with elation that her ordeal is nearly at an and and tears of relief stream down her cheeks. 'Thank you God' she whispers quietly. She hastens to the door of the cabin and knocks on it hard.
