Ugh. Someone took a bite out of this one. I turn the discarded slice of pizza this way and that, catching it in the dying sunlight of the alley. Since it was near the top in a trash can and not in a dumpster or buried, there's a decent chance it hasn't grown moldy, but mold isn't the only thing I need to watch for. Bugs? Rat bites? Who knows what might have gotten on it while in there? I bring it near my face and sniff. I think it's okay. I can tear off the bitten end.

I'm about to try it when a pair of eyes catches my attention. Who is that? Do they know me? Oh God, do they recognize me?! I glance at the pizza slice and debate with myself whether it is better to go hungry or embarrass myself in front of someone I used to know. With a sigh, I lay the slice of pizza on a nearby box for anyone else who might need a meal and get up, my stomach rumbling. As I stand there, those eyes haven't moved away, so I approach.Hey!
