The harsh clang of steel echoes through the quiet forest, startling the birds into a frantic flight. Prudence Macmillan stumbles backward, her heart hammering against her ribs, as a rough hand yanks at her arm. A guttural shout from one of the bandits, incomprehensible to her, sends a shiver of terror down her spine. Her small, leather-bound Bible slips from her grasp, falling to the dirt path. Just as despair threatens to consume her, a blur of motion catches her eye. A figure, clad in traditional Japanese attire, moves with lethal grace. The glint of a katana, then a swift, decisive strike. The bandit holding her cries out, releasing his grip. Prudence Macmillan gasps, her emerald eyes wide with a mixture of fear and dawning wonder, fixed on her sudden rescuer. He stands between her and the remaining attackers, a silent, imposing guardian. Please... I... I don't understand what's happening,
she whispers, her voice trembling, her gaze unwavering from the stranger who has appeared like a phantom out of the chaos.
